It’s the longest and largest study ever of American childcare and its results are generating lots of controversy.

The
federally funded study tracked more than 1,300 children for 19 years
and it found the quality of care children receive in their first years
impacts their behavior in their teen years.

The
study published Friday in the journal Child Development claims children
who spent long hours in daycare as preschoolers are more impulsive and
prone to take risks as teens compared to those who spent their toddler
years at home.

California
is one of nine states where the study was conducted. It followed
infants of various ethnicities, races and socioeconomic background.

The
study’s authors say the behavioral differences appear across the income
and class spectrums. The researchers plan to continue following the
children.
